My work did Day of Caring and I LOVED IT!
Mainly because it gave me an excuse to hang out with kids all morning. We read a book together as a class (I would like to fire whoever chose the book) and my second grade class got really into it despite the material. Then, we all made our own books. I messed up on the example book but my new friends didn't seem to mind that much.
-We went to MY elementary school and taught in the exact same classroom as MY second grade class.
-A girl drew a picture of me in purple and included a very large belly for accuracy.
-One boy came up and put his hand on my stomach, he looked at me with big eyes and said, "is there a baby in there?" Penny kicked him RIGHT THEN, which delighted the kids at the table.
-I did get compliments from a couple students who said I was pretty. Points for that.
-The teacher asked me if I had considered being a teacher because she was impressed we figured out a way to include a spanish-speaking only student, even though we don't know spanish. He seemed to be very into the lesson but I guess that's not the usual case.
Pretty much the best day at work ever.
BTW, the teacher has them all work on Imagine Learning because she thinks it helps any child that is learning to read and write. The principal told us that 64% of the students that go to Franklin Elementary know at least two languages, many of those are ESL students so Imagine Learning has been a HUGE benefit to the school.

Inviting People into Your Home
When I was younger, sometimes the only thing that would bring me peace to say when someone was moving away was to say, "I'll invite you to my wedding." For some reason, I thought that no matter where they ended up, they would still come to my wedding. Unrealistic yet calming for my soul.
A shift in desires came upon me when I got pregnant. I wanted the people in my child's life to be the worthwhile people, the ones that stick by you or you have so much history together that the inside jokes are just a glance away. I used to hold onto or at least feel guilty when I let emotional/verbal abusive people phase out of my life. I think in a way, I wanted to "fix" them but in the end they usually effected me negatively more than I convinced them to change-I was an enabler and co-dependent on the fact I thought I was the opposite.
We overuse the term "invite." Whether it's inviting someone to come to an event, inviting them to dinner or generally inviting them into our lives; maybe we are extending our hand out to those that don't recognize the investment of trust you are asking back.
My shower had exactly the people in my life that I want to be a part of my future family's life. I chose my "invite" list VERY selectively (Jennie, I thought you were still in NYC or else you would have been invited.) I know it's not realistic to see them on a daily basis but I wouldn't mind it if that were to happen. I wish they all knew and were interlaced into one anothers' life, they are all so noteworthy and worth every second of time. We had quite a bit who had to travel far to get to the shower. Idaho, Montana, even Northern Utah is far away to me. I couldn't have imagined it going better. I feel so much love and support for this baby and it brings me joy that she will have so many healthy people surrounding her. That night I was so overwhelmed with appreciation, I felt the need to pay it forward immediately but that was truly impossible. So I made a system that I could treat each gift with as much respect as possible, it will all be well-loved.

National Geographic and Broadway
Monday was Dave's birthday, yipee! I had to work all day, Boo. I went to a movie with him since that was his only request from me that day, it ended up being so much better than I thought it would be.
Tuesday, the original plan was to go to the statue of Liberty and then try to win the lottery for a broadway play. It was supposed to rain so we decided not to become a lightning target, went into the city seeking old book stores, exploring 30 Rockefeller, NBC studios until we quite easily got tickets to a broadway play titled "First Date" starring Zachary Levi (an old COW of mine.)
On Wednesday I got to work with National Geographic. It was so much fun it barely felt like work. I basically was in charge of finding an interesting climatologist or storm chaser. I found out so much stuff on how to survive a tornado or a hurricane. I also found out: 95 people commit suicide a day (that's 1 person every fifteen minutes,) a famous storm chaser died this last May in a tornado in Oklahoma, Stu from the Weather Channel only got into weather because he was severely afraid of thunderstorms growing up and there is a real disease where people have severe phobia of natural disasters. Some of my sisters may say I have that disease.
Thursday was a relaxing day, we ran in the rain. We were in charge of making dinner (hopefully that went over well, they at least pretended to like it.) We unpacked officially. We smurfed with friends back home. I did Maddie's make-up for a fashion show....if you feel like calling me to motivate me to do my class, that would be SO good. I cannot find it in me to do the class and it has to be done in two months. That's terrifying.
Friday I went to work, learned about the Mafia and a cool iPhone security system and then rushed home because we were going to my dear sister KIMBERLY NOORLANDER's house (+ family.) It's only a three hour drive but it was a little spooky considering we had come from a city with houses stacked on each other to the dense forest of upstate NY. It was very dark, very different and had a feeling of Halloween already.
Saturday, we went to Cooperstown New York which is the famous baseball capital of the world. We also went to an apple orchard, got cozy hot chocolate, played some Disney Sorry and went to town eating Thai food. Very cozy, very Noorlander like. We love it here and that we're so close to them.
Today we went to church and then came back a tad bit early to get ready to surprise Dave for his birthday with his favorite foods. On the way home Dave found a kitten that all of the kids fell in love with and forgot to run inside before Dave could go inside. So Dave walked inside and was just confused since he didn't know anyone had a birthday near his birthday but his own personal brownie dish reassured him that it was a celebration in memorandum for him. They have a great trail in the back, I don't know if I've seen anything so beautiful in my life. Basically, it was very eventful, I loved this whole week, I want to remember it but it probably seems dry since I'm writing it all down as fast as I can.

Last Day with the Noorlanders
I'd title this picture: curiosity.
She knows when she gets caught doing something she's not supposed. In this instance, it was eating a muddy rock.
This, is my mom. Doing what she does best. Loving people.

Famous People
Hey!
I just posted on my website some of the people I've been working with. Check it out.
There are many more people but ask me individually if you're interested. I'd like to protect the privacy of some and promote those that are hoping for more recognition.

A Revelation
There is something that I absolutely love about Sundance to the core and it's not what you would expect either.
Yes, it's fun to be able to beat everybody at ping pong because they are super drunk.
Yes, I love the people I am meeting and the fact that so many went to Full Sail (which was the university I was really hoping to go to before I was convinced not to apply.)
Yes, it is amazing to be with people who have such incredible work ethic.
Despite all of it, my biggest scariest part about starting this internship was I worried that they were all coming to my turf. Let's just say, there seems to be a pattern in my life when people come to Utah and then all I hear are complaints about this place. Do you know how heartbreaking it is that I automatically expect that reply now? Well, guess what.
The people who come to the Sundance Labs LOVE Utah. They appreciate the beauty. They appreciate the history. They don't necessarily like the price of alcohol but they get over that. They respect that I don't do all of the same activities as them and yet I feel accepted.
Main point, I hear the kindest words about Utah from those I've met through Sundance and it fills me with a pride I've been longing for.

Such a Crack Up
| I've seen this face a lot btw. Define it as: "Lizi, what do you think you're doing?" |
"You're such a crack up" is a term coined and often used by my parents. So it seems fitting to quote them during our spontaneous photo session on Sunday. They thought I was insane bursting through their doors, (my mother didn't even have all of her clothes on but that's nothing new) and told them I needed them outside pronto. Then, we practiced engagement poses with them and they literally couldn't stop laughing the entire time. My mom was trying to hold her photo smile the whole time but my dad was purposefully trying to do the poses as awkwardly as possible.
I've been taking a lot of photos lately but you can't blame me, look outside! We're in beautiful time of year my friends. These are the outtakes, feel free to see the final products on my "serious" and "mature" website at feslerfilms.wordpress.com/blog/

Final Cut-That's a wrap!
Final Cut Film Festival.
Two years ago, this festival was a game-changer for me. I got two films in and then was blown away by how professional all of the films were. Last year, I was my first year working with the Student Film Association (they showcase the festival) and I adored all of it, despite my responsibility at the time. This year, the week I got back from Africa the Final Cut Film Festival was on the back burner so they asked me to be the Coordinator/Manager/Queen. It opened my eyes to how talented the members of the SFA are and though, most everyone had little to no time to help out on stuff, they still sacrificed enough to help out with advertising, programs, booths, social media, commercials...etc. That's how I feel most endings should be (if only for a year:) celebrations.
I believe in talent.

3's a Charm
Remember this post in 2011?
And this one for 2012?
Well, three's a charm. I have a film in the FINAL CUT FILM FESTIVAL 2013!!!
I haven't really told anyone but the film that was selected is the trailer to my capstone. You can read about when my capstone was approved here, and about how the shooting went here. It's been on the down low because it's a really personal project, slightly controversial but I still believe I can pull it off. There is one place you can watch it online, only one, and you have to look for it but not too hard.
This was Grandma's response to the trailer: " Darling Lizzie-Your work is priceless. The screen is true. Difficult . Moved on. Life is still Great. Perhaps we try to shut out uncomfortable things (at least I do) but truly learn, some setbacks teach. I truly think your work is awesome. Thanks You have the facts. Love You Grandma" Hopefully that's a good sign?
Feel free to buy tickets at byuarts.com and check out the commercials they made this year. I feel so honored to be a part of helping out and leaving college with a bang of 3 years in a row of selected films in the festival.
I believe I'm in the right major.

Annual Skirt Week
I'm fairly certain Annual Skirt Week started my freshmen year of highschool. We'll go with that.
Just three girls deciding to classy it up a bit.
Something to look forward to in February.
I found the "official" piece of paper that hung in our locker a while back but then I misplaced it again.
So, we made up our own from our favorite outfits today and told Jessica about it via email (since she now lives off the coast of Africa.)

How We Fell in Love with NOLA
I made this film a while back. I'm not sure why, other than I wanted a behind the scenes film accompanied to our trip to New Orleans. We had a lot more shots that we loved than what we could put in the Kiva piece so this was the result. I didn't feel like sharing it until today.
Maybe one reason is because one of our crew members, Jason Brown is not featured which is embarrassing but probably attached to 1) my feminism, 2) the fact he isn't my husband and 3) my forgetfulness. So don't be offended? It was a blunder.
Enjoy How We Fell in Love with NOLA.

Coming to a Close-College
Mr. Brown once said, "When coming to the conclusion to a part of your life, the beginning and the ending is what you remember the most." At the time, this was a major compliment since we were his last class before he left for Texas (or maybe being compared to howler monkeys and cockaroaches in cookie dough were insults but I'll take it all as if he were saying we were the best class he ever had.)
At the thought of concluding college, I remembered how bad I was at saying goodbye and avoided ending it. I saved one last class to take when I please; for my sanity, for reassurance of an open ended question and to graduate "quietly." I wanted to be in control of this closure so that it was during my timeframe. Not that I don't appreciate the celebratory dinners, walking in front of hundreds of people and graduation presents. I just fear closing books, even when it's my own story because I'll realize how much I wished to accomplish but wasn't able to. Instead, on the day of my graduation, I can be at home with my dear husband sipping hot chocolate and living my day as nothing different has occurred.
-Right before college, a piece of my hair caught on fire. I had been so good at growing it out since in highschool my hair was mainly a bob. I had to pretend that I purposely decided to have a chunk of it significantly shorter than the rest.
-We had two traditions as roommates, we set up hopscotch and on particularly difficult days we would hopscotch to "Hot and Cold" because for some reason it was the only song that the beat fit the squares we had on the floor. Our neighbors downstairs were not amused with the ruckus. Other nights, when we were too melancholy for the energy, we'd lay there and listen to "May Angels Lead You In." That's what Samantha and I did the night I found out Amanda had died.
-When Provo thawed in March and April of 2009, my roommates and I danced in the rain EVERY DAY. Joyous to behold, I'm sure.
-Capgun hide and go seek was by far the best game we've created spur-of-the-moment.
-Salsa dancing every Friday night. We'd either go to Denny's or watch a movie afterwards and I remember one night waking up in the middle of a movie at 4am with Kristian, Roman, Jaime, Ana, and Samantha sprawled all around dead asleep.
-Watching Singing in the Rain every Sunday or Psych with Sam and Alex. On our ghetto tv VHS player.
-Burning things at Devils Anus and secretly holding hands with Dave on the way home. I remember the day Elric almost set me on fire and that Hugo saved me because Dave was peeing somewhere away from the commotion.
-The day we spray painted our room and it went through the vents and dyed everything else blue. Including my nose hairs.
-The day we frantically tried to repaint our room before our crushes saw their names on the walls.
-Almost winning the intramural volleyball tournament in second division, literally two points away. I was so stressed I thought I would have a heart attack then and there.
-On cold winter mornings, I learned from JiHye to spend 10 minutes in the sauna to warm up your body temperature. Or Amanda's raquetball guitar dancing for when we needed a break from work.
-Drawing a stallion on Dave's chest and painting our face with highlighters for the black light party.
-On the day all of my friends were finding out if they got into the film program or not, I jump roped at work to release some energy. Dave told me over the phone that I got in and I cried. Mainly because I couldn't believe he hacked into my email and told me before I got to look for myself. Weird, I know.
-I remember how disgusted Jessica was when I dipped my feet into the water in Venice. She wouldn't let me sleep in the same bed as her and made me wash my feet every night, twice.
-185 was my favorite class. It was my sole focus for that semester so that worked out perfectly. Every person I met from the class still makes me smile if I see them. I wanted so desperately to be friends with them in places other than class but I didn't know how to do that.
-When Dave and I broke up, my diet was mainly biscuits and every night I had to do yoga or I wouldn't sleep. I couldn't figure out how to turn on my heat so the LHP was so cold and it still had the green 70s carpet.
-Vegas with the girls before Sonia left on her mission was an ironic experience. Yet, long live Cici's Pizza, free outdoor shows, temples in the midst of the city of sin and cheap weekend getaways.
-How honored and thrilled I was when 2 of my documentaries made it into the Final Cut Film Festival.
-Our "Next Year in Manti" activity, where I forgot underwear and forgot how windy it is in Manti so my new fiance (Dave, of course) let me borrow his underwear so I wouldn't expose myself to the whole world.
-Two days after my wedding, we were in IKEA shopping for furniture and Stephen called me to tell me I was accepted into the SFA. I was so happy I jumped on beds that weren't mine.
-I remember yelling "Marriage is what brings us together today!" with Dave as we drove away from the temple on our wedding day. And that Dave was late to the ceremony because they wanted a sandwich.
-I wanted to dance all of the time as a newly wed. I don't know why but I just wanted to release my soul without any concern of how I looked like.
-We kept our Christmas lights on in our first apartment all year.
-Being able to document Jessica Payton's Birthday which was ironically the same day she got her mission call to Cape Verde.
-Making a youtube series with Jessica Cooper, actually all of my experiences making films with her have been extremely positive. Whether that be aerial dancing, words, social entrepenuership films or weddings.
-NO, LA. One night, Katie Ercanbrack and I were feeling adventurous and went on Bourbon street with all of our camera/sound equipment and a man chased us. It was scary. Or the night we watched the couple get hit by the car. We really did have a splendid time though, promise.
-Having the most epic last summer family reunion vacation on Aurora Corner, SD.
-Sonia coming back home and getting her dream job. I love that she comes to French night and that we have a promising geo-cache future.
-Dave's frozen underwear. Still cracks me up everytime.
-The fact that I make the most of my new (or reformed) friends through volleyball.
-Living two blocks from Erika and Linda; with BYU football games in our backyard, ziplines, crepe sundays and kitty soft paws. Erika was singing a solo in sacrament and when she hit the really high note it inspired a young boy in the back of the room to join her in song.
-They played Metro Station's Shake It the last day of classes, which is the exact same song that played my very first day of school.
At the thought of concluding college, I remembered how bad I was at saying goodbye and avoided ending it. I saved one last class to take when I please; for my sanity, for reassurance of an open ended question and to graduate "quietly." -We kept our Christmas lights on in our first apartment all year.

I believe in schema. Sharon would be so proud.
