Many people mention how college students fall in love during this time of year but forget that there are a lot of break ups during this season as well. Whether looking for a fresh start, a summer fling, or for no real reason at all, Dumping sessions are attracted to some of my favorite places around town.

I overheard another break up yesterday. The same cliche phrases, the guy was so surprised he couldn't handle himself and the woman was looking for an escape. It was exactly what I needed to hear. Breakups are oddly comforting: no words that perfectly capture the emotions, both parties get hurt, no reason is good enough and no one else can pin point what those specific people are feeling. All this, accompanied by gorgeous surroundings in a calm quiet place. Simply, beautiful. My issues and the reason I ran away for the day made much more sense.

I believe in personal sanctuaries.

Movie Recommendations

Sherlock Jr is the best movie I've seen in the film program. Satisfying for everybody. 

Short. Clean. Funny.

 

I recommend The Asphalt Jungle because it was a more honest attempt from Hollywood. The heroes aren't all good and the villians aren't all bad. Marilyn Monroe also premiered first in this film. It's not exactly a feel good film and doesn't necessarily have a happy ending but it's more realistic and I still thoroughly enjoyed it.

Catfish. Intense show. Seriously mindblowing. 

Don't read about it, the less you know, the better it is.

(Not for children though.)

Straight Up Hands Down Jaw Dropping Miracle:

Hairy Chest and I drove to North Orem for family dinner yesterday . The car went as fast as 50 miles per hour. Dave isn't exactly the smoothest driver in the world but he hasn't been fired from the position yet. We arrived at my sisters, got out of the car and saw my laptop on the roof of the car. . . . .Logistically speaking, there is no way my laptop should have survived that. I did a lot of thanking last night.

Earth Day

Happy Earth Day!

UNIVERSE is an incomprehensible and gloriously exquisite word. Yet, the universe is a small reminder that there is so much more. So much more to life to grasp and hang on for dear life. Take care of the world today, or if nothing else be outside with bare-feet and feel the earth beneath you. This is a great scene from Tree of Life, my favorite shot is at 2:34. Enjoy!

I'm a Lover.

I told you I'd do ethnographic typography.

It took hours to figure it out with J. Coop but now I can easily go back and make more of these. I can also say that I know a lot more about after effects too. 

When I was interviewing Jess, I loved that she said this. It is so true that if you want to be a teacher, you should be a lover. Her argument is that you have to care about the success of those you teach. While that is true, I think there is even a deeper message to this sentence.

The best teachers are lovers of everything. 

They love to learn, to discover, to indulge in curiosity, to be enthusiastic, to share, to see others grow to love the same things you love. The best teachers love something so much, it makes you want to love it as well. Teachers make a huge difference, just by their attitude.

So, voila, I'm proud to say I'M A LOVER.

Fishy Weekend

People often post an unnecessary amount of pictures of themselves. 

As if when they're driving in the car, they always have a perfect smile placed on their face (yea, I buy that. Road-rager.) OR They wear full make up and take a picture right before they go for a long run and say that it was after they ran. OR how could anyone doubt that they have the ultimate best time with their friends? They take a bunch of pictures of themselves with their friends laughing really hard. Man, life must be so good for people who post a bajillion pictures of themselves. 

I have slowly shifted into becoming not a personal picture poster. My cheeks are too overwhelming to repeatedly put you through that. I do however, take a lot of pictures of people I love. Not because I have anything to prove to anyone but simply because I love them. And I love that I love them. And I love when they are spending time with me. And I document. I document like a crazy person. It's who I am.

 This guy. Let's be real here. If I didn't start with Dave, I should be disowned. He is one hunk of Yum.

My new camera was an adjustment for my family but I think they are more used to it now. I look back at all of my first photos and there are too many poses. Except not of Dave.

 When Goosie was awake this weekend she was quite happy. 

For some reason, Brooklyn's little soul speaks to me. She is little Linda. She is little Eden. She is at that milestone in life where life can be enjoyed as close to it's potential on this earth.

 After I took this picture, Dave wanted me to take a ton more of the fish. He was excited about it so I did it for my husband. So these fish represent a piece of my past where I spent time with my family.

Then, we all put into practice what we had learned and swam until our fingers turned into prunes.

Oh the joy.

This is my family and I couldn't be happier about that.

Personal Benefit Post (Sorry)

Growing up, I wondered what I would be doing at this stage in my life. Needless to say I'm surprised with the result. Here I am at the peak of my academic career and what do I do? I watch a ridiculous amount of films. That may sound like a dream to some of you but it is in reality quite exhausting for myself. For kicks and giggles, I collaborated a list of what my most recent semester has entitled so one day if I ever wonder what I learned in college, I can get a slight idea. The Music Never Stopped is a film I'd like to see and I also included a clip of a similar situation. I guess there are slight similarities between my project idea and The Music Never Stopped because of the aspects of longing to reconnect with family.

Best. Weekend. Ever.

Rachel Sommerfelt said something profound today. She first distinguished the difference between our physical bodies, our spirituality and our souls. Then, she explained that when we as humans neglect our physical bodies it eventually catches up to us and we become aware of our current state. (That moment of awareness happened to hit me last night. Irrelevant.)

It is the same with our spirit. The soul connects our spirit and body causing a completion of personality. If our spirituality is lacking...one day (whether it be days, weeks or years) we will realize our soul has not progressed in the ways we wished it to. Deep down inside.

There will be a moment in your life when you feel as if a dark cloud is following you where-ever you go or a sense of loneliness (even in a crowded room.) It is a part of mortality to feel pain in its highest and hardest form. If you happen to currently feel your lack of spirituality or presence of emotional pain there is hope. You are an infinite, unlimited, precious soul that deserves more than you could imagine. I care so much about you. Every last bit.

As for the photos: I feel like I'm the luckiest person alive. Truly, this weekend held so many treasures and I felt so much love from so many people. 

 The girls had to wear bunny masks while hunting for their eggs.

Final cut went amazingly! We had a surprisingly glorious turnout and I feel that this festival accurately portrayed the hundreds of hours of hard work that was put into the films this year. I'm awed while looking back at the experience and know that I will forever reminisce fondly.

I asked my dad if he was going to come see himself in the film festival (my personal doc is all about his brain surgery you know) and he said, "maybe." I remember what that word meant growing up. "Maybe" usually meant "probably not but I'll say maybe so that you stop asking me."

So I said if he didn't come that I would probably have to add at the end credits, "In loving memory of Buddy Richards." 

Bellpond

Mr. Bellpond (featured in Program A of Final Cut on Friday and Saturday this week) is by far the best student film I have ever seen. I work closely with the people that were a part of it too, they are all so dear to my heart and truly quality people.

This past weekend, it won 2 awards Best Comedy and Best Director at the Student Emmy's! This means that BYU student films have won student emmys 3 years in a row.  Look at this article that was written about them on BYU's front page http://news.byu.edu/archive12-apr-emmywinners2012.aspx. I highly recommend this film and know that you will not be disappointed if you try and make it to one of the showings this weekend.
